Poteau vs. Weatherford, a closer look
Poteau will play Weatherford for the Class 4A state championship Friday at 1 p.m. in Wantland Stadium on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
This will be Poteau’s fourth trip the championship game, but the first since 2013. Weatherford will be making its sixth trip, but first since 2019.
Poteau is 12-1 while Weatherford is 11-2. The Pirates were champions of 4A-4 while Weatherford won District 4A-1.
Both teams have good offenses and defenses. Poteau averages 38.6 points per game while the Eagles score 30.2 points a game. Defensively, the Pirates only give up 7.8 points a game, including three points to Wagoner in a 7-3 semifinal win Friday. Weatherford gives up 14.5 points a game.
The teams have two common opponents in Cache and Sallisaw. Poteau defeated Cache in the quarterfinals, 40-7, while Weatherford defeated Cache in a district contest, 35-26.
Poteau defeated Sallisaw at home in a district game 43-7 while the Eagles outscored the Black Diamonds, 53-33, in the state quarterfinals.
Weatherford knocked off defending 4A champion Tuttle, 16-7, in the other semifinal game Friday afternoon.
