Cedar Lake to close for improvements

Cedar Lake Recreation Area and adjacent hiking and equestrian trails will close beginning Sept. 9 to allow installation of a new sewage treatment system.  The current system has reached capacity and requires continuing maintenance.  The area is expected to reopen by Jan. 31.

“We realize that Cedar Lake is one of the favored fall camping areas in the Ouachita National Forest,” said Acting District Ranger Ben South. “But we are confident that once improvements are made, the camping experience will be greatly enhanced and able to support the needs of campers for many fall foliage seasons to come.”

To install the new sewage treatment system, some areas around the recreation area will require timber removal.  The planned work will impact camping, traffic and day use at Cedar Lake.  Hiking and equestrian trails north of Holson Valley Road will also be temporarily closed.

“Basically, the trails within the recreation area, and those that lead out of it to Holson Valley Road are what will be closed,” said South. “The vast majority of trails are located on the south side of Holson Valley Road and will remain open.”
