Services planned for Mamie Hughes
POTEAU--Mamie Nell Hughes, 88, of Poteau, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019 in Poteau.
She was born March 14, 1931 in Poteau to Morgan and Susan (Garrett) Cochran. Services are Sunday at 2 p.m. at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau with Phil McGehee and Jim Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau, under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home.
She was an amazing homemaker and business owner alongside her late husband Arlie Hughes. Together they owned A&M Food Market for over 20 years. Mamie loved sewing. She was an excellent seamstress, oftentimes making clothes & costumes for her grandchildren.
She took pride in her home and was an excellent home decorator. Later in life, she began caring for children in her home. She loved and cared for them as she did her own grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and crafting.
Surviving family members include her sons Steve and Virginia Hughes, and Barry and Cheryl Hughes, all of Poteau; grandchildren Amy and Doug Martinez of Poteau, Brian Hughes of Lakeside, Montana, Erin and Matt Akers of Poteau, Natalie and Anthony Myers of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Michael and Samantha Hughes of Poteau; great grandchildren Dayton and Dawson Martinez, Isabelle and Hannah Akers, Arlie and Benjamin Myers, and Mason Hughes. She was awaiting the birth of her first great-great grandson later this year. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, loved ones and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Inez Ratteree and Marie Reeves; brothers, Clifford, George and "Nuna" Junior and two infant brothers.
Pallbearers are Brian Hughes, Michael Hughes, Doug Martinez, Dayton Martinez and Dawson Martinez. Honorary pallbearers are Scott Reeves, Matt Akers, Anthony Myers and Charlie Sanders.
