Obituary for Joe Thurman
Joe Thurman, 73, of Heavener was born Feb. 11, 1946 in Howe to Fred and Bessie (Poor) Thurman and passed away July 6, 2019 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Funeral services are Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener with Rev. Ray Weaver officiating. Interment will follow at the Hontubby Cemetery, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
Joe was a long-time resident of the area. He was self-employed, where he hauled pulpwood, hay and rock. Joe loved to be working in his garden and fishing. He also loved to spend time with his family and friends. Joe was a loving husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Joe will be deeply missed by many whom loved and knew him.
Surviving family members are his wife, Deloyce Thurman, of the home; two daughters Jeri Francis and husband James of Heavener, and Kimberly McLaughlin of Heavener; one son Michael Thurman and wife Twana of Summerfield; six sisters Frances Kimes and husband Wayne of Cedarville, Arkansas, Nina Blankinchip and husband Steve of Natural Dam, Arkansas, Irene Davison and husband Mike of Poteau, Patsy Webster and husband Richard of Monroe, Wanda Lawrance and husband Rob of Cameron, and Paula Barnhart and husband Kenny of Howe; six grandchildren Jeremy Naylor and wife Amanda, Jessica Harris and husband Brian, Candice Terry, Jacob Francis, Chase Thurman and Landon Thurman; eight great-grandchildren Brice Harris, Charity Harris, Talen Terry, Weston Terry, Garret Naylor, Addison Naylor, Remington Naylor and Grace Francis; a special cousin, Marshal Thurman; other family members
Stanley “Buddy” and wife Glinda of Stonewall, Marilyn Grantham and husband Jack of Poteau,
Norma Hudlow and husband Wayne of Heavener, Dena McGee and husband Mike of Lovings, Becky Simpson and husband Sam of Lovings and Stevie Oglesby of Poteau; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Bessie Thurman; a grandson, Joshua Naylor; one brother, Jack Thurman; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Loretha and Stanley Oglesby; and two brothers-in-law Ronald Oglesby and Mark Oglesby.
Pallbearers are Bucky McGee, Little Howard Bandy, Shannon Oglesby, Mark McMillion, Craig Kardocus, Darryl Kardocus, Nathan Adams and Heath McGee.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Barnhart, Ross Barnhart, Jody McGee, Daniel Carter, Jason Webster and Rusty Duncan.
Viewing is Monday from noon until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will visit with friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
