Obituary for Alton Washburn Jr.
WISTER--Alton Ray Washburn Jr., 73, of Wister, was born Nov. 13, 1945, in Merkel, Texas, to Alton Ray Washburn, Sr. and LaVurne (Bagby) Washburn and passed away Sept. 14, 2019, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Funeral services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Wister with Rev. Clyde Steelman, Jr., Bro. M.C. Ollar and son-in-law Dale Lowrimore officiating. Interment will follow in Heavener Memorial Park, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
Alton was a lifelong resident of Wister and a member of Bethel Baptist Church for 40 years, where he also served as a deacon for 33 years, and retired from ODOT, where he worked for 33 years. He worked for Ollar and Ollar Construction for three years, CED Construction for six years and was a member of Wister Public School Board for seven years. Alton served our country for four years in the Navy during the Vietnam era and was 100 percent disabled veteran.
Surviving family members are his wife, Elaine Washburn, of the home; three daughters Melissa Lowrimore and husband Dale of Panama, Sherri Washburn of Wister, and Kristi Washburn of Wister; four grandchildren Jessie Borden and husband Kolter of Panama, Jason Lowrimore and wife Melissa of Panama, Alston Washburn and friend Kaitlyn of Wister, and Allie Washburn of Wister; five great-grandchildren Karlie and Rylee Dickerson, Levi and Eli Lowrimore, and Khyleigh Borden; three sisters Frances Hill and mate Archie of Madison, Tennessee, Mary Alsup of Iowa Park, Texas, and Stella Campbell and husband Dennis of Iowa Park, Texas; three brother-in-laws J.D. Ollar and wife Joan of Norman, M.C. Ollar and wife Sue of Glendale, and Cecil Ollar and Diana of Glendale; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alton Sr. and LaVurne Wasburn; and his in-laws, James and Opal Ollar.
Pallbearers are Michael Ollar, Ian McKinney, Tony Smith, Chase Martin, Dennis Shoup and John Paul McAlester. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Bullard, Ike Caudell, Harold Gibson, Jess Akins and Jerry Harmon.
Viewing is Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will visit with family and friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
