Pedestrian struck, killed in Poteau
Poteau Police Department said one man is dead after being struck on Broadway in Poteau Monday evening.
Poteau Assistant Chief of Police Greg Russell said Poteau police and fire departments and LeFlore County EMS responded to the scene after 9 p.m. in the 5000 block of north Broadway on the call of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.
An investigation at the scene found that an older gentleman was walking across the roadway about 49 feet south of Coggins Road where a "crosswalk was not present," Russell said in a press release.
Russell said a 2016 Ford F-150 driven by a Wister man was southbound in the inside line.
Russell said the pedestrian appears to have walked west out of the turn lane into the inside southbound lane in front of the Ford and was struck.
"The driver of the Ford attempted to brake and swerve right but collided with the pedestrian," Russell said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Ford were uninjured.
"Investigation into the collision is ongoing with Poteau police investigators working in conjunction with an investigator from the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner," Russell said.
Notification has been made to the family of the pedestrian, police said. The pedestrian has been identified as John Alan Webster, 59, of Poteau.
