Officials investigating shooting in Poteau
A suspect who held a Poteau E-Z Mart clerk at knife point on Tuesday morning was shot dead, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed.
The clerk and involved law enforcement are uninjured.
The E-Z Mart was locked off with police tape Tuesday morning as law officials processed the scene.
OSBI said it remains an ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as the OSBI interviews witnesses and collects evidence.
The store is located at 1200 N. Broadway.
OSBI said that at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, the dispatch center in Poteau received a 911 call about a male suspect holding a female store clerk at knifepoint.
A friend of the clerk at the store is the one who called 911.
A Poteau police officer and LeFlore County Sheriff's Office deputy responded.
OSBI said the Poteau officer entered the store from the front and saw the suspect holding the clerk at knifepoint. The suspect was ordered to drop the knife and release the woman but refused to do so, OSBI said.
The officer fired one shot at the suspect, who ducked behind the counter with the clerk still at knifepoint.
The deputy then entered the store when the shot was fired and saw the suspect with the clerk behind the counter. She was still at knifepoint and they were struggling, OSBI said.
The deputy fired one shot.
Emergency medical services responded to the scene. The suspect was found dead.
The stae medical examiner is on scene to assist with identifying the deceased suspect.
The OSBI said once a report is complete, it will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office for review. The names of the deputy and officer involved are not being released by OSBI.
