Kiger co-authors election validation voter measure
In our country and our state most would agree that those who vote in any election should be legal citizens. As I strongly support this position I signed on to House Bill 2429 to show my support that only those who are legal and registered should be allowed to vote in any state, city or county certified election.
HB 2429 authorizes the secretary of the State Election Board to conduct a data validation of the voter registration database with other state or federal databases that contain information on the citizenship status of voters.
This measure requires that voters who are identified as possibly being noncitizens be reported to the appropriate district attorney. The district attorney is to notify the secretary within 60 days of the disposition of the investigation.
The last thing I want to do is cause anyone any distress over being confirmed they are legal citizens to vote, but the first thing I want to do is ensure that all people who vote are legal and have the right that all legal citizens of this state have in the opportunity of casting their vote.
It was argued on the floor of the House that the problem isn’t big in the state and there shouldn’t be a concern. My thought is one illegal vote is one too many, and one illegal vote cast can and does make a difference. We’ve seen one vote in LeFlore County elections make such a difference. This measure now moves to the state Senate.
